Secure your PC for the Year 2000!
How it works:
On any given PC, there are three separate clocks in operation:
RTC (Real Time Clock)
An actual, battery-operated clock hardwired to the computer's motherboard.
BIOS (Basic Input Output System)
Part of the underlying software that starts your computer before your operating system kicks in.
SYSTEM CLOCK
What you normally see as part of your operating system.
When you start up your computer, the BIOS reads the time from the Real Time Clock. Then, as your operating system starts up, it gets its time from the BIOS.
Y2K TEST & FIX is the only Year 2000 program that provides a fix for the computer. s true source of time, the Real Time Clock. Other Y2K utilities address only the secondary, BIOS.
The problem with a BIOS fix alone is that it will only take effect the first time the computer reboots after the millennial rollover. If you are relying on this type of fix, you must be sure that every PC you are operating is shut down at the end of the day on December 31, 1999. If you leave the PC on overnight, transactions may be dated incorrectly or lost until you computer is rebooted.
Y2K TEST & FIX avoids such a failure by installing a . resident. utility on your PC that constantly monitors the RTC until the moment of rollover to 2000, when it corrects the RTC. s setting. This method ensures that PCs will not fail upon entering January 2000, whether users have remembered to shut them off or not.
Network Features:
The network version of Y2K TEST & FIX runs on Novell and WindowsNT platforms with Windows or DOS clients. Once the program is installed on the server, it automatically maintains compliance throughout the network. Every time a PC logs on, it is checked. If it is not running the Y2K fix, then the fix is installed. Thus even if a user tries to remove the program or their PC configuration is altered, Y2K compliance is constantly maintained throughout the network.
Available for Windows NT:
If you are using Windows NT, it is particularly important to test and if necessary fix your Real Time Clock. Unlike other systems, Windows NT bypasses the BIOS and accesses the RTC directly, both at boot time and whenever a time service asks for the time. Y2K TEST& FIX is one of the few programs that fixes the RTC, assuring 100% compliance even for Windows NT systems.
